Ted “Monty” Wong was born on September 18th, 1944, in the small town of Holly Grove, Arkansas. His father, Wong J. Ernest, immigrated from China at the age of 19 and eventually opened Wong’s Grocery. His mother, Gong Toy, was born in Mississippi and became a pillar of the United Methodist Women’s Group, reflecting her deep commitment to faith and community.
In high school, Monty was the kind of person who seemed to be everywhere, juggling academics, sports, and extracurriculars with an easygoing charm. He was a proud member of the yearbook club, BETA club, and Boy Scouts, and he excelled in athletics, playing football, baseball, basketball, and running track. His boundless energy and dedication made him a natural leader and a respected figure among his peers.
After high school, Monty was drafted into the United States Armed Forces, where he served for two years. Following his service, he carved out a career at Delta Airlines, working his way up to a role that suited his personable nature in the VIP lounge. Monty’s warmth and knack for connecting with people made him a perfect fit for this position.
After retiring from Delta, Monty embraced his love of travel before eventually returning to the place he had always called home: Arkansas. Today, Monty reflects with pride on the unique blend of American and Chinese heritage that has shaped his life, cherishing both traditions as central to his identity.
